Rachael Yamagata

Check out Rachael Yamagata [official site], a Chicago-based musician who's sort of like Fiona Apple meets Joss Stone, by way of Norah Jones. At least those are the comparisons I've heard made (the Norah Jones one doesn't really stick, apart from the fact that she also plays the piano). Her debut album, Happenstance [amazon], is truly accomplished and well-worth buying. To hear the Fiona Apple-ness of her, check out the track entitled Letter Read, and 1963 is Joss Stone-like (not the disappointing 'new' Joss Stone. It actually feels very much like Super Duper Love.)

I had her album on my iPod to get acquainted with it, but was on Shuffle Play mode in the bus one evening when Letter Read came on, and I knew it wasn't Fiona... but because it sounded like Joss, I assumed it was from her Mind, Body, and Soul album (which I cannot bring myself to listen to in its entirety), but when it didn't start sucking after the first minute, I had to bring the gPod (gangsta pod) out of my pocket to find out who it was. Excellent.
